After a master’s degree in History at the Catholic University of Leuven, Koert Debeuf began his career as political adviser for the mayor of Leuven and later for the Minister of Defence. During the period from 2003 to 2008, Debeuf was the spokesman and speech writer for the Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt. After this, he fulfilled the role of Chief of Staff for the ALDE Group in the European Parliament, before becoming a representative of ALDE for the Arab world. He is also director of the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy Europe and visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for the Resolution of Intractable Conflict at Harris Manchester College, Oxford University. From 2011 to 2014, he lived in Cairo for five years, where he followed the Arab Spring. It is with this background that Mr Debeuf will come and tell us about the EU’s foreign policy towards the Middle East and North Africa.
